<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153 , 153 , 153);">Don't call me swissy-pants.</span></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me tell you, it was no job for the faint-hearted. The turnstile position at the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse required nerves of tempered steel to endure the sideways glances from Disneyland visitors who'd never before seen a guy wearing a blouse and knee socks (not to mention those green knickers borrowed from Geppetto.)</div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
Next, you had to be ever-watchful for any unexpected arboreal emergencies, such as the time the water system went berserk, or the summer evening in 1986 when a pale-complexioned woman climbed up to the highest point and "shipwrecked her supper" over the handrail. For the next two hours, the gate was closed while custodial hosed pathways, stairs, plants, rocks and everything else that had been affected.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And most important of all, a successful and effective Treehouse Host needed to be able to summon up whatever it took to survive...</div>
<div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The</span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> Swisskapolka! </span></span></div>

<div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153 , 153 , 153);">Composer Buddy Baker's original handwritten swisskamusic!</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153 , 153 , 153); font-style: italic;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Please don't misunderstand, I love the music. I really LOVE it!! It's a perky little polka played on a pipe organ to put pep in your step as you merrily explore the world's most fabulous treetop domicile.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
But imagine if you will...back in <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">my</span> day the Treehouse was a full eight-hour shift all to itself. For most of those eight hours you stood (no sitting or leaning allowed) and greeted every person who came through the turnstile, only earning parole a few times a day when somebody from the Tiki Room would walk over and "bump" you to a break. But for most of the long summer day, it was just you and that big rotating waterwheel splashing at your back...and, of course, the never-ending music, flowing down from above.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Until the day the Swiss Family shipped out and Tarzan the apeman swung in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gSvAoHjnktM/S7pwP2tAiBI/AAAAAAAABEc/r7Es9w6vbT0/s1600/2000+organ+prop+ebay.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456797316197419026" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gSvAoHjnktM/S7pwP2tAiBI/AAAAAAAABEc/r7Es9w6vbT0/s400/2000+organ+prop+ebay.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 398px;" /></a></div>
<div>
In 2000, the actual prop organ that had "played" since 1962 was sold on eBay (Oh, the indignity!) This photo, taken by Disney Auctions, with damaged keyboard and missing stops, was the final public appearance of the Treehouse organ. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
But the polka music lives on, not only from the gramophone swisska-tribute at Tarzan's Treehouse, but on CD, on youTube, and of course, in my head where it continues to play on and on and on.</div>

The show script, as recited by our boat's human guide, informs us that Alice lives in the little thatched house situated between the church and the rabbit hole. It's not difficult to imagine a tiny girl hurrying upon the tree-shaded path, in pursuit of a mysterious white rabbit.<br />

Eeee-YOW! This pair of hair-raising paintings by Mort Kunstler really pack a wallop. These two guys—or perhaps the same unlucky guy—are about to become fish food for some monstrous creatures in these fantastic illustrations for a 1950s pulp magazine.<br />

Between 1999 and 2006, Jody and I did quite a lot of things for Disney's Consumer Products division. We designed concepts for toys, dolls, dishes, Christmas ornaments, stained glass lamps, snowglobes, cookie jars, teapots, music boxes, enamel pins, and zillions of other things made of resin, ceramic, glass, wood, pewter and sometimes bronze.<br />

This artwork, never seen by the public, was presented in quarterly meetings, or <i>line reviews,</i> to help visualize products that, nine months later, would travel across the ocean from China aboard cargo ships destined for Disney's distribution warehouses - And, from there, to stores, theme parks, and eventually into childless homes all across the United States!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We're often asked for a comprehensive list of all the Disney "big figures" that Jody and I have worked on together. And so, here it is.</div>
<br />
This is also a fine place to mention that producing these sorts of items is always the result of a team effort. With few exceptions, these figures were sculpted by other artists, and the success of the character likeness depends as much on their ability, as on our concepts and guidance.<br />
<br />
We'd like to acknowledge the exceptionally talented <a href="http://cartooncave.blogspot.com/2012/06/happy-birthday-donald-duck.html" target="_blank">artist Pete Emslie</a> who drew splendid character turnarounds for many of our very best figures, and to Bo Tsai, our favorite sculptor in China. Sadly, Bo passed away in 2012, but his contribution to worldwide Disney merchandise over many decades is legendary.<br />

<div>
It's a special treat to get up-close-and-personal with these beautiful little figures. For several years I've had the great fun of "figure finishing" some of Disney's historic Audio-Animatronic characters, both internally for the Disney Company and for private collections. Tiki Room birds are my favorite, mainly because of their small size, and because I'm such a fan of the attraction's design. The mechanized cast of <i>Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room</i> in Anaheim consists of 77 birds, 136 flowers and 12 tiki drummers (not to mention several chanting totems). Each figure is a work of whimsy and craftsmanship.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
The smallest talents in the show are the "robins" (there are 20 of 'em) perched in cages suspended from the woven mat ceiling of the theater. They really are quite tiny and, I think, easily overlooked. Compared to the more sophisticated animation of Jose and the other "Master of Ceremonies" macaws, the robins perform very subtle functions. Heads turn, beaks open, tail feathers twitch, and some of the robins can flap their wings. They have just enough <i>life spark</i> to convincingly do their job as chorus members. </div>

Recently I restored two original 1963 robins, one after the other, that had been retired from the show decades ago. They both had the fiberglass bodies used in the early California and Florida shows. In the 1980s, a new generation of birds sporting bodies made of lightweight Kydex were developed for Tokyo Disneyland. The Anaheim show today is a mix of old and new bird performers.</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Both robins arrived at our studio in pretty bad shape, with soiled fur, overly-handled feathers, and fiberglass parts gritty from too many coats of paint and hardened glue. The photos below were shot after a weeklong deep cleaning inside and out, priming and painting. I built display perches and replaced the birds' missing feet. I removed their back panels and thoroughly cleaned the inner-workings.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wingless robin with moving head</td></tr>

</div>
It's amazing how much is packed into the interior of a tiny bird. Two rubber hoses, each roughly the thickness of a spaghetti noodle, carry air pressure through the bird's legs into the two cylindrical chambers in his body. The left cylinder operates the tail, and the right cylinder turns the head side to side .<br />
<br />
The next photo is a different robin with slightly different functions.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Robin with moving wings and tail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For this variation, the tail moves, but not the head. Instead the right cylinder pushes open the wings which are hinged at the shoulder. Black electrical wires lead to the head where audio impulses synched to the show's soundtrack would operate a tiny magnet behind the lower jaw, making his beak open and close. When the five robins in each birdcage are moving together, the resulting performance seems choreographed to the music.<br />

With the addition of fur cloth and feathers sourced from Disneyland's original supplier, the birds really come to life. Chicken hackles for a jaunty topknot, coque feathers for the forked tails, and wings adorned with duck quills dyed green and pre-sorted for their natural left side/right side curves. It takes care and patience to do a nice job.<br />
<br />
The Tiki Room's avian actors were sculpted in 1962 by Blaine Gibson, based on Marc Davis's drawings. Engineers Roger Broggie and Bob Gurr devised the inner workings and perches for each bird, and the resulting figures were taken to show-quality appearance by three supremely talented women: Harriet Burns, Leota Tooms, and Glendra von Kessel. I was so lucky to meet Blaine and Harriet in the '90s and learn from them about their work on these fanciful creatures—"based on nature but styled for drama." I'm immensely grateful for the rare opportunity to take on a project like this. The best part is just being able to spend a little time enjoying these great characters in detail.<br />

Do you frequently use words like <i>autopia, circarama, monstro </i>or<i> hippopotami?</i> You know you do! This rare 1962 handbook helped transform Disneyland personnel into well-spoken rhetoricians. So straighten up, relax your throat, engage your diaphragm, and let's all learn how to speak the Disneyland way!<br />

<br /></div>
Whew, we're finally at the back cover---but WHAT a back cover. Disneyland Records were the best souvenirs of all, and these titles are super iconic. Some have been released on CD or iTunes by now, though not all of them. "Life of the Party" is one of our favorites, with recordings of actual player piano rolls (for those folks without pianos at home) and a sing-along booklet of the lyrics. There are so many fine things in this catalog that are, today, the most treasured Disneyland souvenirs ever made. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, if you could go back in time to Disneyland in 1960,<br />
what would <b><i>you</i></b> buy?</div>

Last week was Christmas, and we were busily making gifts, including this miniature wooden ornament for a close friend who loves the 1961 Disney film "Babes in Toyland". It's a replica of the gates to Mother Goose Village—only five inches tall. Our friend was thrilled.<br />

Walt Disney's "Babes in Toyland" (1961) is all filmed on interior soundstage sets. The movie has really fun scenic design, resembling the illustrations in a mid-century children's book.<br />

</div>
<div>
In the late 1980s, I was a designer at the off-site Disney art facility on Olive Street in Anaheim. In our building there was a warehouse aisle of stacked crates containing some of the most beautiful miniature models you've ever seen, some harkening back to the early 1960s and the time of Walt Disney himself. There were parade floats, tiny stage sets, photo locations, miniature puppets and architectural details spanning the entire history of Disneyland's in-Park live entertainment…<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5CfdaCs8fgg/VoIrKKHZCEI/AAAAAAAAEZA/WFjR2TrRGek/s1600/77%2Bmodel%2BCandle%2BDrum.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5CfdaCs8fgg/VoIrKKHZCEI/AAAAAAAAEZA/WFjR2TrRGek/s320/77%2Bmodel%2BCandle%2BDrum.jpg" width="209" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
...including the original hand-made models for 1977's Very Merry Christmas Parade! At the time, these 3/4 inch-scale works of art were still in marvelous shape, and I photographed them all for reference. <br />
This turned out to be a rather smart thing to do, just a few years later Disneyland discarded their entire archive of entertainment models to create room in the warehouse for other things. I believe these photographs are the only way we can view this body of work today.<br />

</div>
<div>
<br />
Disney characters of all kinds, including Pooh, Tigger, the Three Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, appeared with this unit, carrying prop gifts and decorating the Christmas Tree. Snowmen and Snowladies bopped along behind.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
And finally, Santa! Led by his team of silly reindeer, and surrounded by the famous Disneyland <i>Glockenspiel Girls</i>, Santa wished everyone "a very merry Christmas" from his sleigh above a landscape of snowy rooftops! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To all of you who've follow this blog throughout the years, thanks! I hope it's been as enjoyable for you, as it's been for me putting it together. Here's wishing you a very merry 2016! And more merriment to come!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #666666;">"Here Come The Muppets" Parade models, 1990.</i></td></tr>

<div>
With the Muppets' recent comeback for a new generation, I was reminded of my brief brush with Muppetdom in early 1990. "Here Come The Muppets" was the title for a proposed Disneyland parade that would have featured giant inflatable characters rolling down Main Street on floats, similar to the balloons in the Pardi Gras parade (also 1990). Disney had just purchased the Muppets from Jim Henson for an estimated 150 million dollars, and the company was speedily making big (and wild) plans for Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Disneyland President Jack Lindquist had an idea of sending Mickey and the other Disney characters on a year-long "vacation" away from the Park while the Muppets took over for the duration. Some of the concept sketches we saw at the time included draping the Disneyland marquee on Harbor Blvd with a big banner reading "Muppetland", painting the Matterhorn green, and replacing the Mickey flower bed in front of the Train Station with Kermit's face. You think I'm joking?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thankfully, none of this came to pass, but the Disneyland Art Department certainly enjoyed working on several Muppet parade models. In the photo above, Kermit, Sweetums, Dr. Teeth, and Animal were all sculpted by Rich Collins. I did Fozzie and Beaker. Miss Piggy was done by Scott Sinclair, and Jackie Perreault sculpted Swedish Chef. One other model I'd started but never completed: Gonzo in his super-hero cape and red tennis shoes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
On May 16th, 1990, Jim Henson died unexpectedly of pneumonia. I heard the news on KCRW while driving to work that morning. It was a terrible shock, made even more surreal because of the project we had been immersed in for months. With Henson gone, Disneyland's Muppet deal immediately floundered, and we were told to stop working on the parade. Any artwork that we had done featuring Muppets was packed onto a truck and taken away (possibly to the Henson company?) Maybe there's a warehouse somewhere with all our models packed away in crates. At any rate, I'm glad we snapped a few photos while we had the chance!<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9E6epfNu2q0/VUgew4vMBsI/AAAAAAAAEJE/hlQLTQIU7Tk/s1600/Kevin%2Band%2BJody%2BHatbox%2BGhost%2B2010.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="345" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9E6epfNu2q0/VUgew4vMBsI/AAAAAAAAEJE/hlQLTQIU7Tk/s400/Kevin%2Band%2BJody%2BHatbox%2BGhost%2B2010.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"The room they were in was an unfinished attic, and as they turned to run out the door, another ghostly manifestation appeared and blocked their way. He was a cloaked figure with an evil, grinning face. A hat box hung from his hand…"</i></blockquote>
<br />
In 2009, Jody and I fabricated <a href="http://miehana.blogspot.com/search?q=hatbox" target="_blank">a reincarnation of the original <b>Disneyland 1969 Hatbox Ghost</b></a><b> </b>for the first D23 Expo in Anaheim. The figure turned out pretty swell (if we do say so ourselves) and a short time later we were emailed by a well-known film director who at the time was writing a screenplay for an upcoming movie that, we believe, will make even the grimmest ghost grin. In the blink of an eerie eye we were commissioned to build a second Hatbox Ghost, but this one slightly different from our first—more detailed and much more spooky. <br />
<br />
We were inspired by the famous publicity shot of Disney Imagineer Yale Gracey with the early mock-up of the ghost for the Disneyland attraction:<br />
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nt9OaDwJVb4/VUgmr806jdI/AAAAAAAAEJk/ixhMq6TGd8U/s1600/Hatbox%2BGhost%2Band%2BGracey.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nt9OaDwJVb4/VUgmr806jdI/AAAAAAAAEJk/ixhMq6TGd8U/s320/Hatbox%2BGhost%2Band%2BGracey.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Gracey's early version had more facial "decay", frazzled hair, and irises in his eyes, unlike the final ghost that appeared briefly in the attraction. We started with the head and went from there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nzHoeORXils/VUgeoeIcD2I/AAAAAAAAEIs/Zd42eF6eoXs/s1600/Hatbox%2BGhost%2Bhead%2BKevin%2Band%2BJody.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nzHoeORXils/VUgeoeIcD2I/AAAAAAAAEIs/Zd42eF6eoXs/s400/Hatbox%2BGhost%2Bhead%2BKevin%2Band%2BJody.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Working late at night in our studio became increasingly unsettling as this new visitor took shape.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We sculpted his stick body over a steel armature and stitched together his daft disguise entirely by hand.</div>

What's next for old Hattie? We've heard rumors that his restless bones may soon re-etherialize in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, just as the moon climbs high for the Park's 60th Anniversary. Although Jody and I had nothing to do with his long-awaited comeback, we are very anxious to see what may soon materialize in that dark attic corner. Aren't you?</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Way back in 2006, as the collectible tiki mug craze was reaching its height, I made a special mug just for myself based on a (then) fifty-year-old television program that I was completely obsessed with. <i><b>Hawaiian Eye</b></i>, produced by Warner Brothers in Burbank and originally broadcast on ABC-TV from 1959 to 1963, was a "private eye" adventure in modern Honolulu, with murder and mayhem set against the tropical scenery of the islands. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The show had a vacation-like atmosphere with plots rum-infused with luaus, surfing, ukuleles, and Navy Grogs. Anthony Eisley and Robert Conrad were the private investigators working from their stylish poolside office at the famed Hilton Hawaiian Village. Pretty nightclub singer Connie Stevens performed each week in the adjacent Shell Bar, and Hawaiian-born Poncie Ponce added to the fun as a colorful cab driver. Even the villains on the show each week seemed to be on vacation.</div>

The most familiar icon of <i><b>Hawaiian Eye</b></i>, however, was the tiki seen at the opening and closing of every episode. Conceived by Art Director Perry Ferguson (best known for his production design on <i><b>Citizen Kane</b></i>, Alfred Hitchcock's <b><i>Rope</i></b>, and the live-action sequences in Walt Disney's <b style="font-style: italic;">Song of the South), </b>the tiki also stood in the Hawaiian Eye headquarters and served as a sort of good-luck charm for the private eyes. </div>

Let's journey back to "grandmother's day" with some wonderful artwork—part of an original pencil layout—created in 1955 for a rare full-color newspaper section presenting some of the "many delights and wonders that are yours to enjoy at Disneyland."<br />
<br />
The text written to accompany this page:<br />
"The Red Wagon Inn is one of several charming eating places in Disneyland. It is resplendent in the elegance of a by-gone era reminiscent of the famed eating houses of yesterday. All appointments are authentic mementos of the gay and glamorous 90's--including the stained glass ceiling, entrance hall and foyer taken from the S. James home in Los Angeles, one of the West's most noted old mansions. Atmosphere, however, is not confined to the building alone. The menu itself brings back visions of historic good eating --featuring steaks and chops."<br />

<br />
"Grandmother shopped in a store like Swift's Market House on Disneyland's Main Street. Here we find the old-fashioned butcher in straw hat and cuffs, the pot-bellied stove and shelves lined with authentic old-time meat and grocery products. Swift & Company, whose quality meats are served exclusively in Disneyland, is the sponsor of this exhibit."<br />
<br />
"The Chicken Plantation at Disneyland is a gay antebellum river plantation house, reproduced in every nostalgic detail. French Provincial decor and old Southern Hospitality make the Chicken Plantation a memorable spot. You'll want to visit the Plantation soon and enjoy tender grown Swift's Premium Chicken."Kevin Kidneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06401940509568134621noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23059353.post-28677185614433983782014-12-26T15:38:00.001-08:002014-12-26T15:43:13.602-08:00Christmas with Old Friends<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My favorite project this year was creating the corporate holiday greeting card for Warner Bros. Studios Animation. Warners currently owns the Hanna-Barbera film catalog and I was beyond thrilled when they asked me for an original design featuring the classic H-B characters. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--QGvXro0vak/VJ1M8O2yCiI/AAAAAAAAD6U/TrnJVcdA0e0/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BWB%2BCARD%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--QGvXro0vak/VJ1M8O2yCiI/AAAAAAAAD6U/TrnJVcdA0e0/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BWB%2BCARD%2B1.jpg" height="400" width="280" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are so many good characters to choose from so, naturally, I chose the earliest ones and placed the style in the late '50s/early '60s. Ruff and Reddy, Huckleberry Hound, Yogi, and Boo-Boo Bear are constructing a paper tableau using the very tools I used to create the actual scene. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AjrgfbcFm_w/VJ21u4teTtI/AAAAAAAAD6k/hup31nJvau8/s1600/Kevin%2BKidney%2Bcard%2Bprocess.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AjrgfbcFm_w/VJ21u4teTtI/AAAAAAAAD6k/hup31nJvau8/s1600/Kevin%2BKidney%2Bcard%2Bprocess.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This was so much fun to work on, and required some tricky staging to pull off the illusion that the flimsy paper characters were actually supporting the scissors and x-acto knife. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hHTCGmpJOLg/VJ3mB1D-vVI/AAAAAAAAD7Y/0ZDKqMtNNNk/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BPixie%2BDixie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hHTCGmpJOLg/VJ3mB1D-vVI/AAAAAAAAD7Y/0ZDKqMtNNNk/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BPixie%2BDixie.jpg" height="309" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The interior of the card had its own special tableau, as well. I thought it could be fun to contrast large and small characters together in one shot: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UxKtURvI8_g/VJ1M6U-XAyI/AAAAAAAAD6M/iWeSwoz05Zw/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BWB%2BCARD%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UxKtURvI8_g/VJ1M6U-XAyI/AAAAAAAAD6M/iWeSwoz05Zw/s1600/KEVIN%2BKIDNEY%2BWB%2BCARD%2B2.jpg" height="400" width="280" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Magilla Gorilla dangles a real vintage ornament (from our own Christmas tree at home) while the mice Pixie and Dixie leap around. Incidentally, I hope everyone out there reading this is familiar with all these great Hanna-Barbera characters. We don't see them very much today—except perhaps for Yogi Bear—which is quite a shame. I spent countless hours of my kidhood enjoying the TV antics of these characters, and it was a dream come true to be able to revisit with them for a short while as they skipped across my workbench.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Illustration for <b>Los Angeles Magazine</b> by Kevin Kidney & Jody Daily, March 2011</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
Rolly Crump is one of our favorite designers in the whole wide world. Whether we're talking about his theme park contributions for Disney, or his satyrical counter-culture posters, Rolly rules.<br />
<br />
A few years ago Los Angeles Magazine asked us to create an illustration to accompany an article about the legendary artist, and of course we were thrilled. Our first rough concept was heavily inspired by our love for Rolly's "Museum of the Weird":<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wA0S51dSL1s/VAZd_T3OjpI/AAAAAAAADww/dbCU3Q3jPaM/s1600/kevin%2Bjody%2Brough%2Bconcept.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wA0S51dSL1s/VAZd_T3OjpI/AAAAAAAADww/dbCU3Q3jPaM/s1600/kevin%2Bjody%2Brough%2Bconcept.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Our first concept. Too weird?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Rolly's bizarre bats and dragons proved to be a little too dark for the tastes of the magazine's art director, who asked us to try something lighter and more cheerful. We decided to take elements from some of Rolly's more familiar Disneyland designs and build an imaginary theme park out of them. We lovingly referred to this concept as "Crump City":</div>
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a1gw-b1BhnY/VAZd-rKK58I/AAAAAAAADws/sMUmIo4gn4c/s1600/Jody's%2BCRUMP%2BCITY.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a1gw-b1BhnY/VAZd-rKK58I/AAAAAAAADws/sMUmIo4gn4c/s1600/Jody's%2BCRUMP%2BCITY.jpg" height="254" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"Crump City" preliminary sketch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The art director liked it, and decided we should do sort of a mock "attraction poster" with the elements. The design became more and more simple as our "poster" took shape. We created our art digitally in Adobe Illustrator and played around with possible color schemes.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxX502qqiaM/VAZbh_zn7SI/AAAAAAAADwU/RiNZVbLCVU0/s1600/CRUMP%2Bkevin%2Bjody%2Bcolor%2Bvariations.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxX502qqiaM/VAZbh_zn7SI/AAAAAAAADwU/RiNZVbLCVU0/s1600/CRUMP%2Bkevin%2Bjody%2Bcolor%2Bvariations.jpg" height="236" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Experimenting with different colors and values.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
We did a lot of fussing with colors until we landed on the final bright purple version at the top of this post. Everyone seemed to like it, and we even received a swell compliment from Rolly himself. Score!</div>

Rolly Crump is one of my favorite artists in the whole world—not only for his groundbreaking Disney work—but for his quirky and beautiful independent art as well. Actually, I'm inspired by everything I've ever seen him do.</div>

In Disney circles he is known for his designs on the Enchanted Tiki Room, It's a Small World, the Haunted Mansion, the Adventureland Bazaar, and to a lesser degree for his legendary unbuilt <i>Museum of the Weird</i>—macabre and witty concepts that were <i>decades</i> ahead of their time and Tim Burton.</div>

According to Rolly, even while at Disney he always had cool projects going on the side.<br />
In 1960, a chance meeting with West Coast rock poster pioneer, Howard Morseburg, led to a new venture in printmaking. Rolly's satirical designs poked fun at Beatnik culture, the coffee houses and jazz clubs of Greenwich Village, Seattle, San Francisco, and the East Bay. </div>

<div>
His easy-to-read graphics satirized big issues of the era, from drug use to the human rights record of revolutionary Cuba and the Soviet Union. Though they apparently weren't made in extremely large quantities, the hand-pulled prints were popular with artistic young musicians and hipsters, and were influential on poster design that later dominated the Sixties.</div>

Four paper people in rectangular frames, looking like minimalistic strangers on a train, could be something you'd expect to see in a museum of modern art. But this small three-dimensional model made of cardboard, white paper, and plastic toothpaste caps is actually a piece of rough concept art created for one of Disneyland's most famous parades.<br />

<b><i>America On Parade</i></b> ran daily at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World during the 1975-76 US bicentennial anniversary. Consisting of fifty units and 150 performers, it was by far the most elaborate parade ever staged at the Disney parks.<br />
<br />
Here are some very rare images—most of them shot by myself in the late 1980s using a Polaroid instant camera—of the wonderful scale models that Disneyland kept in storage at the time. Back then, the Disneyland Entertainment-Art Department preserved a treasure trove of artwork for Park shows going all the way back to the early sixties and Walt's lifetime. When I was just starting out as a young parade designer at Disney, I became fascinated by these fragile hand-made miniatures and assembled a file of snapshots for my own personal reference. Around 1999, shortly after I had transferred out of the department to a new position in Glendale, I learned to my horror that nearly all of the Anaheim model shop's archive had been destroyed or discarded in order to "free up precious storage space for other things." I've come to believe many of the photos I had taken might now be the only existing record of this (mostly vague) corner of Disneyland history.<br />

The <b><i>A.O.P </i></b>models were made in 1974 by Clare Graham and a small team of artists under the creative direction of Bob Jani, who had also led the creation of the <b><i>Main Street Electrical Parade</i></b>. Built from simple materials, such as colored felt, paper, wire, and illustration board, these models guided the construction of the final full-sized parade floats.<br />

These "transportation" floats, depicting the 19th and 20th centuries are pretty fantastic, as well. Some of the models shown here were photographed for a 1975 souvenir book (by David Jacobs) sold during the parade's run, but most historic Disneyland parade art is unpublished, lost, and unknown. I'll try to share more photos in the coming months, even the out-of-focus ones! </div>
